Dust obscuration of DLA galaxies

چکیده
We show that the extinction of quasar absorbers increases exponentially with the logarithmic column density of any volatile metal (e.g. zinc), with a charateristic turning point above which the quasars are severely dimmed. We derive the relation between extinction, HI column density (NHI), metallicity (Z ≡ NZnII/NHI) and fraction of iron in dust [fFe(Z)] in Damped Lyman α (DLA) systems. We use this relation to estimate the effect of dust obscuration on the statistical distributions of NHI and Z measured in magnitude-limited surveys of DLAs. In the redshift range where the measurements of zinc column densities have sufficient statistics (1.8 6 z 6 3) we find that the obscuration bias affects the shapes of the observed distributions. The metallicity distribution is particularly affected by the bias, which hampers the detection of DLA galaxies with near solar metallicity. Our results perfectly reproduce, without tuning the dust parameters, the DLA observational threshold logN(ZnII) [cm] . 13.15 found by Boissé and collaborators in 1998, in terms of a rapid rise of the obscuration. Our predictions of the effects of the bias on the statistics of DLAs are consistent with observational results obtained from unbiased surveys of radio-selected quasars.

Metallicity Evolution of Damped Lyman-α Systems
According to Pei, Fall & Hauser (1999), the global metallicity evolution of the Universe can be represented by the ratio of the total metal content to the total gas content measured in Damped Lyman–α (DLA) systems (the “column density weighted metallicity” à la Pettini). To minimize dust obscuration effects, a DLA sample with negligible dust content is considered, namely, 50 DLAs with logNHI < ...

Many investigations of star formation rates (SFRs) in galaxies have explored details of dust obscuration, with a number of recent analyses suggesting that obscuration appears to increase in systems with high rates of star formation. To date these analyses have been primarily based on nearby (z ≤ 0.03) or UV selected samples. Using 1.4GHz imaging and optical spectroscopic data from the Phoenix D...
متن کاملThe dust obscuration bias in Damped Lyman α systems
We present a new study of the effects of quasar obscuration on the statistics of Damped Lyα (DLA) systems. We show that the extinction of any Galactic or extragalactic H i region, Aλ, increases linearly with the column density of zinc, with a turning point ∂Aλ/∂(logNZn) = 1, above which background sources are suddenly obscured. We derive a relation Aλ = Aλ(NH, Z, z) between the extinction of a ...
متن کاملDust obscuration studies along quasar sight lines using simulated galaxies
We use the results of a set of three–dimensional SPH–Treecode simulations which model the formation and early evolution of disk galaxies, including the generation of heavy elements by star formation, to investigate the effects of dust absorption in quasar absorption line systems. Using a simple prescription for the production of dust, we have compared the column density, zinc abundance and opti...
متن کاملGalaxies and Dust at High Redshift S 37
Much of our knowledge about the formation and evolution of high-redshift galaxies has come from studying the absorption signatures they impress on the spectra of background QSOs. The damped Lyman (DLA) systems, in particular, have proved to be valuable probes of the metallicity and dust at redshifts z 2{3 in what are the likely progenitors of galaxies like our own. At z 2 we nd that the typical...
